Calgary Councillors Approve Brewery Regulation Changes Unanimously

New bylaws could pop the top on more craft breweries in the city

Calgary Councillors Approve Brewery Regulation Changes Unanimously

Craft brewers are raising a glass to city council for relaxing rules on setting up shop in Calgary.

If you brew it, they will come.

At least, that’s what the City of Calgary is hoping after it made it easier for craft breweries to set up shop around the city.

A change to city bylaws that creates a new zoning category for breweries, wineries and distilleries passed unanimously at Monday’s council meeting.

Councillors did have questions about the finer points of the regulations – such as how they might conflict with restrictions on how close liquor stores can be located.

An administration official explained that because the breweries would only be retailing their own wares, it would not be an issue.

The rules will allow breweries to brew alcoholic beverages, serve them for consumption and retail them all under one roof.
