What is Boba / Bubble Tea?
Boba / Pearl Milk Tea, which is more popularly known as “bubble tea” or “bubble milk tea” first made an appearance in Taiwan in the 1980s. From there, it has become a popular dessert-like beverage around the world.
Bubble tea starts with a tea base that is combined with milk and fruit flavouring and then poured over dark pearls, called Bobas. The pearls are made from tapioca starch combined with syrups, water, potassium sorbate and guar gum. The result is a “mostly flavourless”, chewy black bubble.
