If you spend a lot of time on the side of the internet that presents you with weird, random videos that leaves you thinking, “how did I get here?”, then you’ve probably seen the infamous “helium beer” video. And if you haven’t you can watch the helium beer video on ItsGoneViral.
This video created by Jim Koch outlines the beer that is brewed with helium instead of carbon dioxide. The video goes viral every few months and causes a frenzy every few months and shoots up the Google searches for “helium beer”– but does Helium beer really exist? And if so, where can you buy helium beer?
What is Helium Beer?
Coined by Jim Koch, helium beer is produced by infusing helium gas or liquid helium into beer. Most beers are brewed with carbon dioxide (CO2) which creates the carbonation. Or in certain beers, such as Guinness, a nitrogen/carbon dioxide mixture of beer gas is infused into the beers. This mixture creates a more smooth mouthfeel in the beer’s carbonation than the carbon dioxide.
What is Helium?
Helium is a colourless, odourless, non-toxic gas that is known for its ability to make balloons float and make human voice high-pitched when inhaled. Helium is light than air, which means that in a balloon, it displaces the air around it, thus causing an upward force.
What happens when you drink helium beer?
Well, much like when you inhale helium, drinking helium beer will give you the same effects. A sip of this beer will immediately heighten your vocals and have you sounding like you’re a cast member of “Alvin and the Chipmunks.”
Is helium beer safe?
Yes! Helium beer is 100% safe. Helium is a non-toxic gas and has proven no negative effects when ingested other than your high-pitched voice that will go back to normal after a few minutes.
Where can I buy helium beer?
Well, unfortunately, you cannot buy helium beer quite yet. It was a limited release and Jim Koch’s “Heli-Yum” beer hasn’t hit the shelves yet.
…most importantly because it was an April Fool’s Joke.
