About California Common by Prairie Dog Brewing

Prairie Dog brewed this lager/ale hybrid as an homage to their close attachment with California, where most of Prairie Dog’s founders lived immediately prior to launching their business. This style resembles American Amber (Red) Ale, but it uses a unique strain of lager yeast, which was primarily used in “Steam Beers” during the early 20th century in San Francisco before dying out and being resurrected by Anchor Brewing (San Francisco) during the late 70’s. This version is amber with a foamy head with an assertive, old-school West-coast bittering/flavour hop to balance out the toasty, malty base and roasty undertones.

Our focus is on quality in traditional beer styles with some added funk to be enjoyed in a comfortable environment.
