During the industrial revolution in Europe, Pale malts became more accessible to the masses, which in-turn meant more "Pale" beers. This gave rise to the "Bitter" style, which was primarily due to the addition of hops in English brewing, as well as a "sessionable" alternative to the popularity of Porters and Stouts. During this time many of the London Pubs adopted the name "Three Tuns" based on the arms of a London Livery company or trade guild.
