In the 1860s, the work of Viennese Anton Dreher and Bavarian Gabriel Sedlmayr on the science and technology of brewing and malting allowed the development of two similar types of beers: Oktoberfest and Vienna Lager. Vienna lager stands out for its less malty side and its roasted bread flavors and aromas, unlike Okterberfest which is caramelized and very malty.
