About Buffalo 9 Brewing Company
Our Name
In 1974, a De Havilland Buffalo aircraft with 9 Canadian peacekeepers on board was shot down over Syria with no survivors. Our name, Buffalo 9
Brewing Co, honours those 9 peacekeepers, as well as all the men and women that served and sacrificed for our freedom. Our beer names and label designs will pay respect and honour our military’s contributions both past and present. There is a second meaning behind Buffalo 9 Brewing Co. One of our founders grew up on a rural Alberta farm where highways 9 and 41 (nicknamed the Buffalo highway) meet. Both founders have had family members serve in both world wars and it holds great importance to them.
Our Logo
In the First World War, most battalions of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces had unique badges worn on their service caps. Our logo is our representation of one of these iconic cap badges, with a brewery twist of course.
Our Founders
Lane, growing up on a farm in rural Alberta has helped him know his way around grain and hops. His home brewing adventure all began about 10 years ago when his wife Kelsey, bought him his first beer kit and equipment for Christmas - thinking it would be a 'fun' thing to do together. Lane began using grain from his home town, formulating his own recipes, taking courses and completing the Business of Craft Brewing course from Portland State University. Lane is very methodical and seeks perfectionism in what he does.
Kelsey, born and raised in rural Nova Scotia, moved to Toronto after university and then on to Calgary... meeting Lane. She has rural and urban flare and brings energy to what she has passion for.
Their young daughter is a huge fan and promoter of this family venture and is a brew master in training!
Hard work, determination and perseverance has gotten them to this point.
Why the Military theme: Both Lane and Kelsey have had family members serve in both WW1 and WW2; it holds great importance and pride to them. They chose this theme for their brewery to pay honour and respect to the past and current veterans and the keep the education of Canadian War history alive.
