About The Merchant Ale House
Prior to opening the doors of The Merchant Ale House back in 1998, three friends had a simple vision. Serving fine, hand crafted beers in a comfortable setting where friends are made and kept. After several years of refining his recipes, Brewmaster John Tiffin and friends opened their St. Catharines brewpub with 4 original house beers: Old Time Hockey Ale, Blonde Bombshell, Drunken Monkey Oatmeal Stout and the Extra Special Bitter. This menu has grown over time to include numerous house-made craft beers and selections from other Ontario and Niagara microbreweries. Nearly 20 years after it first offered craft beer to the people of St. Catharines, The Merchant Ale House is now a staple of the city’s downtown core, and of the Niagara region’s ever-expanding brewery landscape.
