About Third Street Aleworks
At Third Street Aleworks we balance tradition with experimentation. We gravitate towards “Anglo-Celtic” style ales and more aggressive “West Coast” style ales, but we also brew some tasty lagers, lager-ale hybrids, and many other beers that don’t neatly fit into any particular category. We keep an open-minded approach to the art of brewing. We love our traditional cask-conditioned ales, and standards (like our Bodega Head IPA and 4 X G.A.B.F. gold medal winning Blarney Sisters’ Dry Irish Stout) but we don’t limit ourselves to traditional beer styles or a typical fixed “flagship” beer list. From year to year and season to season, our beer roster is constantly changing. To us, the whole point of being a small independant Brewery is that we have the ability to mix it up and keep it fresh!
Brewmaster Tyler Laverty runs the brewing operation at Third Street. Tyler began his professional life as a young chemist in the wine industry – an experience that’s given him a unique perspective in the beer world. As an active homebrewer and member of the Sonoma County Beerocrats Homebrew club, Tyler was gradually drawn to the UC Davis Master Brewers program and the world of professional brewing. Tyler excelled at UC Davis and was awarded the Crisp Malting Award for academic excellence. Upon graduation he took a position as Asst. Brewer at Third Street Aleworks where he worked under the supervision of our former Brewmaster (the highly esteemed and locally legendary Randy Gremp). In 2014, Randy retired, and the rest, as they say… is history. Tyler has a depth of brewing knowledge, and a real enthusiasm for the craft. He’s also a good guy. Next time you see him setting up a cask behind the bar or testing out a new beer with the bartenders, say hello! He won’t bite.
Part of our philosophy as a small craft brewery is that we strive to evolve and grow. After 15 years of people asking where they can find our beers in stores we decided to start bottling. Yep, after 15 years… we like to go at our own pace. Because of the excellent reception our bottles received (and to keep up with growing demand) we expanded the brewery in late 2012. We’re still a small craft-brewery with small brewery values- and we still brew every beer we sell on the premises- but now you can find our beer from San Francisco to Mendocino and all points in between. To learn more about our bottled beer and where you can find it, check out our Bottles page.
Third Street Aleworks was founded by old high school buddies/extreme beer enthusiasts Todd Hedrick and Chris Hagan. The idea of Third Street Aleworks was always a simple one: great fresh beer, great comfort food, and great people: A simple formula that’s stood the test of time. Brewery and restaurant construction began in the fall of 1995 and the doors (and taps) opened to the public on March 8, 1996. Cheers!
